The Sawtooth Mountain Clinic is presently out of influenza vaccine. Health care providers nationwide have been coming up short on this year’s vaccine, with most running out a week ago. Some new vaccine might be available as early as Dec. 22.

Minnesota deer hunters harvested a record 253,300 whitetailed deer during the firearms deer seasons that concluded Nov. 30, according to the state Department of Natural Resources. “Good weather, healthy deer populations, and a simplified system of distributing lots of licenses for antlerless deer all contributed to the record harvest,” a DNR spokesman said.

Third-grade students at Sawtooth Elementary spent a day learning about grains in a course entitled “Seeds of Change,” taught by instructors from the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center. The students studied everything from the structure of kernels of corn and wheat to how to bake the grains into delicious corn bread muffins.

Dec. 20, 1993

A burglary discovered by Harbor Light Supper Club owner Brad Rude was reported to local law enforcement at 7 p.m. Dec. 12. The burglar or burglars apparently broke in sometime late Saturday or early Sunday morning. An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen. Entry was made by prying open a locked back door. Drawers, cabinets and the wall-mounted safe were broken into, and the safe torn from the wall and pried open.

Nearly 570 telephone customers who live in Tofte will wake up to new telephone service on Dec. 14. At that time, U.S. West Communications will replace electro-mechanical switching equipment with state-of-the-art digital electronic equipment. The conversion will affect Tofte customers who have a “663” prefix. They will notice a slight change in dial tone, a different ringing sound and faster call completion. However, all customers must now dial the seven-digit number to complete a call.

Dec. 19, 1963

At a meeting at Cook County High School on the evening of Dec. 11, about 50 interested citizens of the county discussed the problem of petty thievery by minors. Superintendent Walter Hard, who called the meeting, stated that just as the schools were working out a program of instruction to improve attitudes toward honesty and responsibility, members of the community had felt the problem was serious enough for a public meeting. As can be seen, said Hard, success depends on the cooperation of any citizen who catches a minor stealing.

Two lighted crosses shining over Grand Marais have been added to the community Christmas decorating this year. One is high on the TV tower north of the village, the cost defrayed by the local Chamber of Commerce. Another shines above the local Coast Guard station. Last year a cross was placed on the lighthouse at the harbor entrance.

Carl Hedstrom had the misfortune of cutting his knee with a power saw, and seven stitches were required to close the wound. He is up and around, but not at work.

The Girl Scouts had a fudge party at Bally’s residence.

Ed Toftey has installed a radio set at his home.

Emil Hall made the round trip on the ice the full length of Hungry Jack Lake Wednesday night with his Ford car.

A showgirl of only 16 years old has just married for the second time. She’s got a better start than most, and if she doesn’t make a world’s record, she has only herself to blame.
