The Cook County School Board approved the school levy certification at its regular meeting Monday. The final certified levy is $354,825, a very small amount compared to past years, according to superintendent Chuck Futterer. “It’s the maximum allowed, but it’s a decrease over past years,” he said.

Cook County commissioners awarded a contract for $1,344,304 to Abramson Construction Company of Orr for major rebuilding of a 3.134-mile stretch of the Gunflint Trail. The money comes from state aid funds generated from state gasoline tax revenue. Reconstruction of this segment from 1.9 miles south of the Gunflint Trail’s junction with Forest Road 140 to a point 2.94 miles north of that junction is the first part of a two-phase plan. The second part will be undertaken when more state aid money is available.

The state is set for the 8th Annual I-500 cross-country snowmobile race Jan. 23-25. This year the World’s Toughest Race will include three days of racing and will return to the rugged wilderness racing through the Canadian bush country and Superior National Forest of previous years. Day 1 begins in Thunder Bay and finishes in Grand Marais; Day 2 runs from Grand Marais to Duluth; and Day 3 runs from Duluth to White Bear Lake.

Ed Anderson, commercial fisherman here, reports seeing a sea gull swooping down behind his skiff while he tended his herring nets on Lake Superior, grabbing a lamprey, and making off with it. He estimates that the lamprey was at least 20 inches in length, and as the gull made off with it it had coiled itself around the gull’s neck. Two other gulls were chasing the first gull when Anderson last saw them. “That lamprey just didn’t have a chance,” Anderson said.

Fourteen applications for the office of clerk of court were received and considered by the Board of County Commissioners Monday. The vacancy must be filled before Dec. 31 by appointment.

Progress on the $280,000 dial telephone project in Grand Marais is moving along with testing of the component parts now under way. Once the various units have been tested individually, the entire system will be tried out in search of any irregularities.
