Great Expectations Charter School opened its doors on Tuesday, the first day back from a scheduled break for the 44 students who attend the newly-formed school. The new building, which is on the corner of the new Gunflint Trail and Fifth Street, features a large common area, four light and airy classrooms, one of which will be used as a library, and a kitchen and administrative offices.
Tim Suck, 14, won Best Act of the Show at the Grand Marais Playhouse talent show/fundraiser at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts last weekend. The talented young musician brought down the house with his rendition of “This Old Guitar.” Tim Young, his daughter Madeline, and Buddy Skinner won “Worst Act of the Show” for their karaoke performance with hula hoops. The winners of each category received a $100 prize.

Cook County commissioners agreed Nov. 9 to support the concept of rebuilding the Tofte Airport with a blacktop runway. The support is contingent on success in pending land acquisition, the working out of a joint powers agreement between the county and Tofte, and arrangements for managing airport operation through the county airport commission.
For those deer hunters fortunate enough to get their deer opening weekend, this was probably a typical or even a good year for hunting. The bottom line is that this year’s deer hunt has been disappointing. After four days, registrations in Cook and Lake counties were down 54 percent. And it doesn’t matter if you had snow or not. Bill Peterson of the DNR said, “Lake County had snow and Cook County didn’t, but they’re both down 54 percent.”
County commissioners voted to proceed with the process of reverting County Road 33 to the United States Forest Service. The road, 1,250 feet long (.24 miles) originally served a landfill which was closed in the late 1970s. It extends west off County Road 2, the Sawbill Trail.

NOV. 14, 1963
Two juveniles were apprehended by the local unit of the U.S. Border Patrol last Wednesday while the two were hitchhiking on the Grand Portage Reservation near the international boundary. It developed that they effected illegal entry into the United States, and they were both wanted in Superior, Wis. in connection with the robbery of a grocery store and assault of the owner on Oct. 21.
Rose Running reported finding ripe strawberries in the Tofte-Lutsen area.
Thomas Nelson of Minneapolis visited several days with his folks, the Carl Nelsons. On the return trip his car was loaded down with the “fruits” of his dad’s labor – one cabbage so big it would last them all winter.
Birch Grove Elementary School is the name selected by the West End people for their new school. Twenty names were suggested, and from these, three were given the highest votes. Those three were Timberlaine Elementary School, West End Elementary School, and the one chosen. Of the final votes, the results gave Timberlaine 56 votes, West End 55 and Birch Grove 66.

Leo Hussey has purchased a radio receiving set and is able to get in touch with the programs at Chicago, Los Angeles and other distant points.
Ludwig and Earnest Luick, sons of Mr. and Mrs. E. Luick, are again able to be around after a siege of scarlet fever. The house has been fumigated and the quarantine raised. The oldest boy, Ludwig, returned to school Tuesday after being absent three weeks.
In a letter from Chris Murphy asking us to change the address of his News-Herald, he informs us that he has purchased a grocery business in Seattle, whither he has already gone with his family. His many friends here wish him success in this new venture.
John W. Clark left here yesterday for his trapping territory near the Paulson mines.
