The new power plant for Grand Marais came one step closer to completion last week when the first two diesel generators were installed at the new site at the west end of town. The large brightly painted diesel engines with generators connected to them were slowly lowered to their spots on the foundation of what will soon be a six-megawatt power plant to serve the city in emergencies. A third, much larger diesel generator is being shipped from England and will be arriving in a matter of weeks.
The county board lent its support to a project designed to enhance an interpretive walkway along the Lake Superior shore of Tofte. The Commercial Fishing Museum requested that the county draft a letter of support for the project for inclusion in a federal grant application. The county also agreed to act as fiscal agent in the event the Lake Walk Committee is awarded the grant. There was no financial commitment on the part of the county.

Rockwood Lodge is building two new cabins on their island across the lake.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has awarded a grant for $6,820 to KUMD-FM to begin the process which will extend the Duluth public radio signal to the Grand Marais area. This is the first major step in creating the county’s own locally originated programming, a goal that the Community Radio for Cook County Committee has pursued for nearly two years.
Final information on the results of this year’s moose hunt has been compiled and shows that in northeastern Minnesota, 84 percent of the 315 permitted groups successfully bagged a moose. Of the 164 moose registered, 198 were registered in Grand Marais and Finland. The other 66 were brought in at Ely and Eveleth.

A truck trailer unloading rock salt for the state highway was badly bent out of shape Tuesday afternoon when a telescopic hydraulic hoist gave way sending the box, loaded with 21 tons of salt, down upon it. The driver of the truck and two maintenance foremen were near the truck when the accident happened, but no one was hurt. The unloading was being done near the state garage east of the village.
A local resident feels that the village would do well to erect some horizontal bars for children to work out on. He has noticed that many children are using various guard rails or fences for the same purpose, in some cases on private property. A few pipes and a bit of shavings could do the trick.
Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Backlund and daughters were in Minneapolis Saturday and Sunday. They saw the Minnesota- Michigan football game and had a special interest – Jack Nelson is one of the coaches with the Michigan team.
Buckley Benson had a few days in the local hospital, but is now at home again and feels okay.

Notice to boys! Slingshots are not to be used inside of the village any more than other dangerous weapons. Windows have been broken in several instances and the names of several boys handed in. Parents are asked to see that their boys commit no more depredations and the boys themselves are appealed to to comply with the request herein made and use their influence with other boys to keep them from promiscuous slingshot shooting.
Mr. Curry of the National Candy Company was calling on the trade in Grand Marais this week.
Hans Toftey is having running water installed in his residence.
Chas. J. Johnson was hurt in an elevator at Duluth last week. The car started too soon and the door hit his shoulder. He has recovered.
