The 78th annual meeting of the Cook County Historical Society was held at the Harbor Light. President Leonard Sobanja reported on the multiple activities over the past year. In the only piece of business, Clayton Koss was voted a new trustee on the 17-member board. The evening speaker was John Henricksson, who talked to the 60-some members with delightful examples of Gunflint characters. John’s new book, out this fall, is a more serious look at how these individuals evolved.
Grand Marais’ racing “elders” cleaned up at the Edmund Fitzgerald 100K Road Race last weekend, coming in first in the uneven mixed masters category. Buck Benson was one of six who made up the over-40 team which called themselves the Outbacks. “We won by 48 minutes,” said Benson. A total of 99 teams competed in the relay race which started in Finland and ended at Brighton Beach outside of Duluth.

Regional representative Pat Colbert of the U.S. Tennis Association was on hand at Cook County High School last Monday to teach kids the basics of tennis.
A filming crew from the British Broadcasting Company is doing a two-hour documentary on wilderness in the United States. It will have one hour devoted to Alaska, and another to wilderness in the lower 48. They chose the BWCAW to represent the Midwest, and a scout was here last summer to find a location. The film crew has four persons.
The Cook County Vikings parlayed a strong second quarter effort into a 17-0 victory over Nashwauk-Keewatin for their sixth victory of the year and a berth in the Section 7C playoffs. The Vikes, who scored all 17 points in the second period, survived an early scare as the Spartans returned the opening kickoff to the Vikings’ 15. The Vikes stiffened, then intercepted a third down pass to end the threat.

A 4-year-old boy is in St. Luke’s Hospital where he has had specialists’ care for one of his eyes, injured in a playtime accident. He was at play with a group of children in the alley near his home when he was struck with a board which had an exposed nail in it. The resulting injury was a serious one.
The Greyhound Bus Company will make its last run from Grand Marais to Pigeon River next Sunday. The bus company’s application for temporary suspension of this run has been granted by the Minnesota Railroad & Warehouse Commission. The company contended that the number of passengers on the run does not average one per trip, and that facilities for winter bus storage are not available.
Olar Snevitts of Poplar Lake recently shot a Canadian lynx at the back door of his trailer.

Miss Katherine Amyotte has been assisting in the bank this week.
The house occupied by Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Babb at Durfee Creek was moved about 100 feet north on account of the new road going through where the house stood.
Monday a partridge flew through the big plate glass window of the Grand Marais Bakery. The bird was instantly killed, falling on the floor of the bakery. The damage done was estimated at about $75. A game warden happened along and took the bird.
John Zimmerman has resigned as dock agent and is getting ready to trap. Victor Johnson now has charge of the dock.
Andrew Bordeen left Wednesday to do some blacksmithing at Hovland for a few days.
