A good burn window brought firefighters, helicopters and spotter planes to the end of the Gunflint Trail last week for a three-day, 6,400-acre burn in the blowdown areas near Seagull and Saganaga lakes. Almost perfect conditions – humidity below 50 percent, good winds and wind direction, temperatures in the low 70s and some ground moisture – meant that much of the heavy fuels in the blowdown area were consumed by the prescribed burn, reducing wildfire danger in the future.
