Wish lists and harbor maps were unfolded at the Safe Harbor Advisory Committee meeting on Monday as members continued discussions about the possibility of developing a full-service marina in the Grand Marais harbor. Any development of a safe harbor and/or marina will require months, if not years, of work as well as the go-ahead by the city council, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota Land Trust.

Definite progress is being made on the new Gunflint Trail in Grand Marais. Phase I and Phase II of the $3.9 million project have already been completed and work is proceeding at a good pace in the longest and most complex portion of the project, said County Engineer Chuck Schmit.

The Grand Marais Planning and Zoning Commission approved Sept. 13 a request presented by East Bay Hotel that the city sell a lot to the hotel, and vacate a portion of First Avenue East. East Bay Hotel had also requested that the east portion of Wisconsin Street be vacated, but the commissioners took no action on that request. They want to study it further, and intend to act on it at a later date. The approval for vacating the section of First Avenue East and selling the lot will make possible the expansion of Eat Bay Hotel and its parking facilities.

The Cook County Board of Commissioners authorized the highway engineer to proceed with the contract for construction of an airport arrival/departure and office building. The low bid was $105,600 – nearly $5,000 lower than the competing bid. Work is expected to begin this fall.

Through the kind cooperation of the Board of County Commissioners the services of a truck will be available for collecting exhibits for the county fair. This action of the board will facilitate the sending of exhibits and should result in a fair truly representative of all parts of the county. The Fair Board hopes that farmers and gardeners will be interested and that the number of exhibits brought to the fair through this means will fully justify the action of the county board.
