Unsatisfactory work on a retaining wall over a drainage ditch just west of Eighth Avenue West in Grand Marais has created a bottleneck in the flow of work in the Highway 61 reconstruction project. It’s also choked traffic flow as cars and trucks are funneled over the narrow bridge near Trailside, which has been slated to be widened and should have been completed by now.
Graduation requirements for Cook County students will have to be changed slightly to meet the level of the Minnesota Academic Standards adopted by the legislature earlier this year. The new state academic standards must be implemented by the end of the 2003-04 school year, and students graduating in 2006 will be required to graduate under the new requirements.
Tom Eckel has been fishing commercially on Lake Superior and inland lakes all of his life. He caught fish for people to eat, not make a big fuss over. But on Sept. 9, Eckel found the biggest herring in his nets ever. Back on shore at his fish house, the proof was on the scale. Seven pounds and 25.64 inches. A record for Minnesota!

The Cook County Arts Center Action Committee has hired Minneapolis planning consultant Cheryl Kartes and Associates, agreeing to pay a fee of $2,850 for her services. Kartes will develop a strategic action plan, encourage community involvement, furnish a summary case report and identify possible funding sources.
The Cook County Citizens Advisory Committee received a memo from Highway 61 Corridor Manager Rod Garver identifying safety, aesthetics and enhancement of urban centers as the three major design goals. Specific additions to statements about those three will be developed by the committee. The memo says, “The design shall provide a safe highway. The design shall provide an aesthetically pleasing highway. The design shall enhance the urban centers along the highway.”

The first day enrollment for all of the Cook County schools totaled 1,007 students at all levels, greatest in the history of the school system. Kindergarten enrollment for Grand Marais and Taconite Harbor was 81, and grades 1 through 6 in all of the schools enrolled 486 pupils. The first day enrollment at Cook County High School was 440.
Cocoa, the dog at Rockwood Lodge, came upon a bear cub near one of the cabins. He circled it for some time and then quick as a flash made a dash for its throat, getting a death grip. Hearing the cub cry in anguish, Rick Whitney parted the two animals.
The grass fire near Gladmanor brought out the village fire equipment yesterday afternoon, but was under control before it arrived. There was no damage.
Nice thing about taking a trip to the city dump is that you get a picture-based kind of view of the harbor and Coast Guard station way, way down below over the tops of the trees. An incredibly beautiful sight.

Mr. and Mrs. Gustaf Anderson and two children arrived last Wednesday from Sweden and will make their home in Rosebush. Mrs. Anderson is Mrs. Carrie Skoog’s daughter.
Special Game Agent Kintop has been employed at Cascade Lodge this summer. He was in town today. He intends to return to the road as a grocery salesman. That was his occupation before he became a sleuth.
Herman Hynes has sold his Ford touring car to Thomas Hayes.
Anton Arnquist of Hovland was in town Monday and Tuesday, having his car overhauled.
