. Joan and Bill Koski, the campground hosts at Crescent Lake Campground, saw a cougar on Forest Road 170, the Grade. The cougar was in no hurry, so they got a good look at it. . Great Expectations, the first charter school in Cook County, opens its doors Monday, Aug. 18. The 40-plus students who will attend the new charter school will have lots of opportunities in the next month to explore their school environments. The building where the school will be housed hasn’t been built yet, and Great Expectations will be moving around a little bit as they wait for their permanent home to be completed. For the first week the students and teachers will meet at the Community Center in the curling rink area.

. School activity participation fees for 1993-94 were set at the Aug. 9 school board meeting after discussion that showed concern over what board member Chris Conlan initially called a “ridiculous and astronomical increase” over last year’s fees. Superintendent Don Langan explained that the dollar amount proposed for the coming year keeps Cook County schools significantly lower than other schools in the conference and across Minnesota. Sports team fees for grades 7 and 8 will jump to $15, and for grades 9-12, $25. Fine arts and non-athletic activities will cost the participant $10 in grades 7 and 8, or $15 in grades 9-12. . TIP board members met with the Grand Marais City Council Aug. 11 and reported that the TIP is in dire financial trouble. John Conda of the TIP board said that the major concerns of the board are that the tourist information office in Grand Marais may be near death because of lack of funding. “Without that office, what happens to businesses, what happens to visitors looking for information?” he asked. He estimated that with the reduced budget the board has adopted in an effort to keep things going, they will need a bare minimum of $52,000 for this season. 50 YEARS AGO · AUG. 15, 1963 . Walter Halverson, 59, lost his life last Saturday morning as he swam to retrieve a boat that had drifted away from shore as he and his son-in-law were preparing to go fishing at Devil’s Track Lake. It is believed he may have suffered a heart attack, as he was an excellent swimmer and was near the boat when he went down.

. Coach Dave Erholtz expects from 40-45 candidates out for football next Sunday when suits will be issued. Practice begins at 8 a.m. Monday.

. Notice: The Civil Defense siren will be operated for short intervals during the week of Aug. 19, for testing. Do not become alarmed!

. Attend the Cook County Fair next week. The quality may surprise you!

90 YEARS AGO · AUG. 16, 1923

. Rev. Johnson of Chicago will preach in the Swedish language in the Lutheran church of Grand Marais Sunday morning.

. Tom Carter returned home from Milwaukee Monday night. He is a student in an electrical college there.

. Fifty Girl Scouts from different parts of the state arrived Sunday night on the steamer America and left Monday morning for Hungry Jack Lake, where they are now in camp. Chivalrous young men of this village furnished cars and drivers to take them from here to their destination gratis.

. Gasoline prices dropped 6 cents in Grand Marais Tuesday morning. Gas is now selling at 24 cents for low test and 27 cents for high test.
