The Centennial Fisherman’s Picnic was a great hit this year and featured everything from parades to cute puppies, fishburgers to shrimp boils and lots of contests to keep everyone satisfied.

At 9:05 p.m. Aug. 2, Cook County Law Enforcement received a call from town – a young woman had been hit on the highway while crossing in front of Dairy Queen. “Amazingly, there were no incapacitating injuries, “said sheriff deputy Mark Falk. “My understanding is that she was completely run over, but there were no broken bones. Apparently the front tires went over her.” The 19-year-old Grand Marais woman was taken by ambulance to the North Shore Hospital, where she was treated and released that night.

AUG. 9, 1993

Three Nature Conservancy officials met with the Cook County Board of Commissioners July 27 and announced intent to transfer the 320-acre Carlton Peak property now owned by the Nature Conservancy to a government entity that can best manage and use it on a long-range basis. County board members showed interest in the possibility of acquiring the property, in the hope of future exchange or sale.

The Schroeder Citizens Advisory Group met July 26 with representatives of the North Shore Management Board, the Department of Natural Resources and LTV Steel Mining Corporation. Ex-Gov. Elmer Andersen and Emily Andersen, both board members of the Sugarloaf Cove Interpretive Center Association, were also present. The parties discussed the potential of building a boat launch, breakwall and sheltered basin for small boats on the south end of LTV shoreline at Taconite Harbor. That site has been suggested many times as an alternative to the controversial Sugarloaf Cove site the Schroeder group has always preferred.

50 YEARS AGO
AUG. 8, 1963

For the first time, a Gunflint Trail girl became Miss North Shore at the annual Fisherman’s Picnic. She is Cynthia Cushman of Sea Island Lodge. This summer she is a waitress at the Shoreline dining room.

A tragic air accident near Rockford, Ill. took the life of Rolly George Cole, 24, a member of the renowned Cole Family Air Circus on Friday. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Duane Cole, former owners of Pike Lake Resort. This was the second such tragedy at a mass flying meet of aviation enthusiasts at Rockford. In the first, a Virginia couple lost their lives.

The fire siren brought volunteer firefighters to a smoke smudge at Ed Lind’s early Tuesday morning. The smoke was confined to an unused shed where it is believed youngsters may have been smoking and dropped a cigarette. No damage was done.

AUG. 9, 1923

William Bally has engaged a blacksmith and will now keep his shop open all the time.

Wanted – Young lady to solicit subscriptions for The Duluth Herald in this locality. Liberal proposition. Write George H. Hunter, circulation manager.

Joe Anderson is now working at the Community Restaurant. Val Millet has resigned and expects to go to Dakota. He may spend a week in the North Woods.

The Motor Inn and Midway garages have added high test filling stations.

Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Babb came in Saturday from Cascade Mountain to spend a few days in the village and take in the picnic.
