Coast Guard Admiral Ronald Silva, responsible for command of all of the Great Lakes, and other high-ranking officials visited the Grand Marais Coast Guard Station on Monday. Silva and Master Chief Petty Officer Bryan Clemons have been traveling together on a two-part mission. Clemons said they want to “physically see every plant, harbor and facility and meet the people directly to understand what they are about.” Silva said, “It’s important to meet the auxiliary Coast Guard units (volunteers) because there are 4,500 of them and less than 2,000 active duty personnel.”

Mother Nature dished out a sampling of her awesome power last Wednesday at Taconite Harbor when she brought down a hillside of mud across Highway 61, blocking the road and cutting power to Cook County. Caught in the path were a United Power Associates substation, which was damaged, and a Monson truck, which was destroyed. The driver escaped unharmed. The slide was triggered when a coal ash depository owned by LTV Mining became saturated with water from heavy rains and broke loose from the hillside, cascading a half mile down the hill and covering the highway and adjoining area with six to eight feet of mud. The width of the slide was about 100 yards.
A meeting will be held Aug. 18 for the purpose of determining interest in creating a full-size baseball diamond. With a full-size diamond, probably at the high school, a midget team could be established. Coach Arleigh Jorgenson said construction work would involve mostly dirt for the infield and perhaps some fencing. The field work would also allow a Legion ball club to be established.

Although they are not certain, the Handelands and the fire department agree that it appeared the wiring in the neon sign on the trailer had shorted and started the fire.
