The pristine cold clean waters of Lake Superior are among the region’s most important resources and serve as an important tourism magnet. However, some of Superior’s beaches have been shown in tests conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to be anything but pristine, at least part of the time. According to tests done through a federal grant, 10 Wisconsin beaches have been found to have unsafe levels of e-coli coliform bacteria at least once this spring and summer.

Grand Marais city councilors heard a presentation last Wednesday detailing the goals and strategies of fundraising efforts for construction of Harbor Park. The target is set at $500,000. The campaign will run through next March and target past and former residents, seasonal residents, businesses and foundations, and the federal and state government. The park design was arrived at after a lengthy and extensive public planning process. It is estimated that the cost for development of the 44,000-square-foot site will be about $12 per square foot.

JULY 19, 1993

Bob Worrell started walking at Sabine Pass, Texas on March 15. By Sept. 1 he hopes to reach Moosonee on James Bay to complete the first-ever saltwater to saltwater south to north traverse of the continent. Worrell, a 60-year-old Oklahoman, passed through Cook County last week, averaging about 15 miles a day. The total trip is 2,200 miles.

The 1993 Grand Marais Arts Festival stayed mostly dry between rain storms and recorded another success. Ten more artists and craftsmen than in 1992 showed their wares to an appreciative crowd of 3,000 on Saturday, with most vendors reporting good sales. Sunday’s weather held down attendance The biggest and most popular attraction, by far, was Howard Sivertson’s demonstration at the Johnson Heritage Post Gallery, organizers agreed.

50 YEARS AGO
JULY 18, 1963

Important scientific studies are being made in this locality. Since July 7, a three-week testing period is in progress as geophysicists attempt to learn more about the earth from explosions set off in Lake Superior. The research team is led by Dr. John Steinhart of Carnegie Institute in Washington, D.C. About a ton of Nitramon explosives are said to be involved for each test. Setting them off in deep water minimizes the damage to fish. In a similar test conducted in 1958, it was stated that only one dead fish was found.

The Raikens had the misfortune of having their dog killed last Saturday. He has been the family pet for 11 years and was considered the third member of the family.

Nancy Tormondsen along with Diane Dunder and Carol Schmidt of Taconite Harbor and Kitty Gordon of Grand Marais are attending a cheerleading school at Lake Geneva, Wis. for a week.

Mrs. J.A. Spelman was taken by ambulance last Friday and is at St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment.

90 YEARS AGO
JULY 19, 1923

Jonas Backlund left Monday morning for New York City, where he will work for Foley Bros. on a dock building contract. The job is good for three or four months.

The federal government is out to exterminate the barberry bush. Arthur G. Peterson and Roland C. Devan are here under orders from the Department of Agriculture to look the county over and find out if there be any of the abovementioned objectionable plant, which harbors the insect which spreads wheat rust.

John Teberg, a former resident of Hovland, died at St. Francis Hospital in Superior, Wis. at the age of 69 years. His death was caused by gangrene.

Miss Bessie Sjoberg, who has taken up nursing in Minneapolis, is home on a three-week leave of absence.
