A July 4 party on Mount Maud Road in Grand Portage turned ugly in the early hours of July 5, resulting in multiple assaults, injuries to persons and property and the arrests of three adult men. The three were arraigned July 8 in Grand Marais, and were also reportedly banned forever from setting foot on the Grand Portage Reservation ever again.

Environmental activists with Earth First! left the county on Monday like they entered it – quietly. The activists, who would not give their last names, said they were satisfied with the Earth First! Round River Rendezvous. “People came. People learned. People had a good time,” said a man who called himself Storm. “The local folks have a good thing here. They should hang on to it.” The activists also said they were peaceable, and were bemused by the level of local angst over their presence.

JULY 12, 1993

Beth Gagnon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis and Jayne Gagnon of Grand Portage, will be among the candidates competing for the title of Miss Teen of Minnesota at the state pageant in St. Cloud. Beth will be a sophomore at Cook County High School this fall. She is sponsored in the pageant by the Grand Portage Tribal Council. The winner of the pageant will receive a $1,000 cash scholarship as well as an expense-paid trip to the national pageant.

Roller skating at the Community Center is about to take an upswing! After 10 short sessions, there will be some new and varied activities with the new speaker system and newly sealed floor, which will be ready immediately. This week will be “Christmas in July” and skaters will move to their favorite Christmas music and lighting. There will also be periodic “Santa Giveaways,” and Christmas cookies for all.

JULY 11, 1963

The Department of Health, Education and Welfare has approved a grant of $103,000 for an addition to the North Shore Hospital. The total cost of the project, which is to be a nursing home, is estimated at $206,000.

The Cecil J. Snows of Mankato arrived Monday evening for their summer’s stay at their cabin. They found that last fall’s storm had moved their cabin necessitating much repair work.

Lt. Marshal Fenstad flew his Navy plane over Grand Marais Monday and Tuesday evenings. He was impressed by the view of the town, which he had not seen from the air before.

Barbi Nelson of Hinsdale, Ill. accompanied by Mrs. Laura Grant, is here to assist with the summer dancing classes. The two recently attended a dance caravan in Chicago.

90 YEARS AGO
JULY 12, 1923

About 1:30 o’clock this morning John A. Dewar’s sawmill on the Little Devil Track River and some lumber burned. The origin of the fire is not known.

Sigurd Eide of Tofte was in town Monday repairing the long distance telephone lines.

The rafting crew of the Schroeder Lumber Co. arrived in town Wednesday to get the logs ready to be taken to Ashland, Wis. They have put up tents which they will use as sleeping and eating quarters.

Rev. F.W. Stowe returned Sunday afternoon on the bus from a 10-day stay in Minneapolis. While there he got ptomaine poisoning from which he was very sick for a short time.
