A safe harbor and marina could be built in the Grand Marais harbor, but it would have to comply with the terms of the conservation easement the city gave to the Minnesota Land Trust years ago. In the conservation easement, agreed to after months of talks with the Land Trust, it was specified that the land on the west side of the harbor, including the campgrounds and park, would be kept for recreational use only. The subject was the topic of a discussion of the Grand Marais Safe Harbor Committee at its monthly meeting last week.
Following a county board discussion about whether it would be appropriate to post signs banning weapons from the courthouse and/or courtroom, the subject was tabled.
Property insurance ratings in the service areas of the Schroeder, Tofte and Lutsen fire departments could drop from Level 9 to Level 8 as early as this fall. The rating level drop could result in an estimated 8 percent rate reduction in homeowners’ insurance rates for residents served by those fire departments. The rating was changed because the goal of pumping 250 gallons per minute for a two-hour time period was achieved. That goal is the minimum for the insurance rating level drop from 9 to 8. Level 8 is the best rating available to a volunteer firefighting force.
