Apparently because proper procedures for obtaining a permit were not followed, contractors for CenturyTel drove their heavy equipment right through the Flute Reed River, causing the river to run brown because of the major disruption of the stream bed. This was done during prime spawning season, and at a delicate location in the river, said Flute Reed Watershed Project Coordinator Sally Nankivell. The disturbance may affect an entire season of fishing for steelhead trout on the North Shore.
