Last Friday A.J. Scott Sr. had an encounter with a black bear. He was going through the woods near his shack in North Colvill and stepped on a windfall under which a big bear was nursing her cubs. The animal jumped up and attacked Mr. Scott, biting him on the leg. He stepped back, partly falling down, and pulled a revolver from his pocket and fired a shot into the bear’s body. The animal continued the attack and Mr. Scott fought and shot, shooting four times in all. Bruin reared and Mr. Scott grabbed its throat with one hand and with a hunting knife made an incision in its throat. The bear then fell over, and Mr. Scott was able to walk back to his shack. His clothing was badly torn and his leg badly lacerated. This is the fiercest encounter ever recorded as having taken place between a human being and a bear in this neck o’the woods.
