A heated debate over management of state Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA) lands is resurfacing at the capitol this week, with Rep. David Dill preparing an amendment to auction off state-owned land in the wilderness area. The argument is over school trust lands, which annually generate millions of dollars in royalties that are distributed to schools across the state.
Boaters in all the Great Lakes are advised to be aware of the low water levels and increased hazards to navigation this season, said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A comparison of April monthly mean water levels to the long-term average shows Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario are well below average.
Grand Marais city councilors gave the go-ahead to a proposal put forth by the local Girl Scouts to make a number of improvements to the city’s dog pound. Speaking on behalf of the Girl Scouts, Nancy Briggs said the group has already procured some donated paint to re-do the inside of the building and material to make beds for the penned-up pooches. The girls would also like to paint a mural on the inside walls, as long as city officials have no objections. There were no objections.

During an exercise sponsored by the Hovland Volunteer Fire Department, the Paradise Beach Supper Club was set on fire to give firefighters some practice. In particular, firefighters learned the secrets of venting smoke with hoses.
Entrance fees at the Grand Portage National Monument have increased from $1 to $2 per person this year, with a maximum charge of $5 per family. The national monument is one of 126 National Park Service areas whose entrance fees were raised on Jan. 1 as part of a nationwide fee review. The $1 fee had been in effect since 1988.
After two meets last week, it is becoming evident that this is a year for the girls’ track team to shine while the boys’ team, which is young and thin, gains skills for future years.
The city council will be appointing a citizen advisory committee to make recommendations regarding the use of snowmobiles within the city limits.

The horrifying experience of speeding down the Gunflint Trail in a truck that was without brakes and out of control, crashing through two walls of a fishhouse and finally landing in Lake Superior, was the lot of Wilmer Croft last Saturday evening. And all of this without serious injury to himself or anyone else. Croft, 42, emerged from the truck by way of the windshield. There were two gaping holes in the Eckel fishhouse, where the truck had crashed through. And tracks showed that after the truck left Highway 61 it was airborne for 69 feet!
The A&W Drive-In has already opened for the summer months with Richard Horen as manager.

The Tofte pupils of the fifth and sixth grades enjoyed a marshmallow roast on the shore of the lake Tuesday evening.
All persons are warned to keep away from the water’s edge on the harbor front where the scow takes gravel. It is very deep right up to the shore line and caves very easily so that a person could be pulled in with the gravel. Children especially are warned to keep away from there.
Adolf S. Carlson of Hovland is in Grand Marais to apply for a passport to Sweden. He will take in the Guthenberg exposition this summer.
Romeo Dalbec of Good Harbor Hill is suffering from scarlet fever.
Paul Winters of the White Bus Company was arrested today because he violated the State Highway Department orders to keep Trunk Highway No. 1 closed for big buses. The mail was brought in last evening on a big bus. Mr. Winters was not allowed to return today. His hearing will be held tonight.
