When construction resumes on Highway 61 in a few weeks county officials will try to limit the number of truckers using County Road 7 as a detour around the work zone just west of Grand Marais. Commissioner Gene Erickson raised the matter of increased traffic on County Road 7 caused by motorists – particularly drivers of large trucks – looking for a way around the delays caused in the work zone. He said the increased volume of traffic was noticeable last fall, and stated that it will again be a problem in the spring if something isn’t done to control it. “Not only is it damaging the road, it’s a safety issue,” added Commissioner Bob Fenwick, noting that County Road 7 was not built to handle the type and volume of traffic that’s likely to find its way up there.

About 50 people gathered and stood in a circle at Harbor Park with lighted candles during a vigil March 16 for a peaceful resolution of the Iraq standoff. The event was echoed worldwide.

The first week of girls’ softball practice further enhanced the optimism surrounding the upcoming season. Sixteen players reported for practice, many new to the program but just as many with two to three years of solid varsity experience.

March 22, 1993

The county commissioners approved a request from the Hovland Fire Department for a $10,000 grant to help pay for an addition to their fire station. The money is needed to add a meeting and training room to the existing building which houses the firefighting equipment.

A private nonprofit foundation named the North Shore Health Foundation has been formed by joint action of the Cook County North Shore Hospital and the Cook County Community Clinic. The North Shore Health Foundation has quietly initiated a major fund drive to establish a long term funding base for both the hospital and clinic.

March 21, 1963

By action of the county board, the office of Veterans Services Officer for Cook County has been abolished. George Johnson, who has served as service officer the past several years, stated that he had received a notification from Alfred Rindahl, county auditor, that the service would be discontinued as of April 1, 1963.

Mrs. Stanley Thomsen, Fort Wayne, Indiana, is one of 20 semi-finalists in the state of Indiana for the Mrs. America contest. Her husband is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Thomsen of this village.

There was excitement along the Allard Hill this morning when the Taconite Harbor ambulance was seen hurrying up and back on the section of Cramer Road. Phone calls on the party line sorted out possible candidates, and we found that little Jackie Wojiuch, 10 months old, was hurried to the local hospital with a chest cold.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Johnson were Duluth visitors Saturday and had a rugged journey home, due to the bad road conditions.

March 22, 1923

Does your suit need cleaning and pressing? Bring it right over to Lillian Nelson. She will do it.

The big snow storm Saturday night blocked the road west, delaying the Monday mail until Tuesday afternoon.

The barber outfit formerly owned by Woods & Seglem has been sold to Charles Nylund. Chas. Seglem will continue to help out on Saturdays.

John Mulligan has returned from Ely where he has been all winter estimating timber on government land.
