Sept. 27, 1999 • It would cost approximately $21,400 to run a comprehensive summer school program in the county according to information presented at the Sept. 20 meeting of the Cook County school board. The estimate includes salaries for elementary, middle and high school teachers ($18,010), supplies ($1,400), texts, workbooks and miscellaneous items ($2,000).
Board chair Jane Mianowski said that whatever the board decides to do for summer school next year, she believes efforts must be concentrated in the lower grades. “We have to solve the problems early,” she said, adding that if a solution is required summer school, then so be it. • Directors of the North House Folk School told Grand Marais City Council last week the facility needs a long-term lease and commitment from the city if the nonprofit educational facility is to continue to thrive.
North House co-director Mark Hansen said, “Longevity is the key here, and we need to have a secure home. We’ve already seen that people believe in this and are willing to work for it.”

Sept. 25, 1989 • School District #166 has added two halftime elementary positions to the Birch Grove and Grand Portage schools.
The two positions will provide teachers with assistance in giving instruction in basic skills such as math and reading. • A party was held Sept. 9 at Passion Pit, with about 25 kids showing up. Some came and stayed a few minutes, while others stayed and played volleyball in the sand, drank pop and listened to music while enjoying the bonfire and of course, the food. • If there is a crucial area on the football field, it is the goal line. An error here can mean irrevocable damage.
Such was the case when the CCHS Vikings went to Esko for a game of football. The end result was a 33-7 Esko victory. Not indicative of the team’s play, the score remains nonetheless final.

Sept. 24, 1959 • Clifford M. Valentine, Canadian Customs official, and his wife fortunately escaped injury in the fire that completely destroyed their summer home on the Little Pigeon River Saturday night.
Cause of the fire is not certain, but it is thought to have originated from an oil heater. • Hungry bears with a hankering for apples broke through a window in a garage owned by a Plattville, Wis., nursery on the former Ed Sannes farm in Hovland, taking a bushel and a half of apples and making a mess generally. The apples were on a truck covered by canvas.
Thetheft was reported by George and Albert Kettler who had brought the truckload of apples here, as they usually do in the fall.
“We didn’t mind losing the apples, as we have plenty of them,” George said, “but to bring them all the way from Wisconsin for the bears!” He added that it appeared several bears were involved. • A moose decided to hang around the Art Sundquist home last Friday. He simply ignored everyone and even the dogs didn’t frighten him. Pictures were taken, some late at night.

Sept. 24, 1919 • TheFifthAnnual Fair will be held on the last three days of this week. It will be a successful fair if its exhibits represent the best the county has produced from its farms and gardens, and the industrial work of its homes. It will be more successful if the attendance is full and representative of all the county.
And it will be more successful yet if it arouses in all a stronger conviction of the real advantages and great possibilities offered by this county to all who are willing to work.
If successful in such manner the fair will grow bigger and better each year and prove a valuable force in advancing the welfare of the county. • Five masked men bound and gagged the mail clerks on the Ocean Limited Express of the Canadian National railway near Harlaka and robbed the mail car of $75,000 in paper and silver. The money was being shipped from Montreal to Halifax. • A special school election will be held in the village school house on Oct. 4 for the purpose of voting on the question of issuing bonds for the building of the Good Harbor Hill school house.
It is very important to have a good representative vote on this question in order to assure the sale of the bonds, so go and cast your ballot. Ladies can vote as well as men.
