10 Years Ago • May 24, 1999 • Chief Deputy Mark Falk has resigned his position with the Cook County Sheriff ‘s Department to become chief of police in Canby, Minn.
Upon hearing of Falk’s resignation, most county residents who have come to know and admire Falk over his 10 years in law enforcement here had two questions: What are we going to do now? And, where’s Canby? • On April 19, a new face appeared in City Hall — that of Daryl Sulander, the new city finance director for Grand Marais.
The position, a new one for the city, was created to assist with all of the financial activities of the city including investing, bookkeeping and general accounting duties. • Cook County school board members are considering the possibility of adding a curriculum that trains students to repair and operate computers next year.
For $20,000, the district would get a teacher trained, curriculum and technical support and assessment for two years. It would include students in grades 7 through 12.
20 Years Ago • May 22, 1989 • A 22-year-old Minnetonka man died Sunday from injuries suffered in a fall from a cliff on Carlton Peak in Tofte.
Cook County Sheriff John Lyght said the man apparently fell from the rocks early in the morning. He and two friends were camping in the rock quarry on the Carlton Peak Road, where they had been fourwheeling. Lyght said the trio had been partying the evening before. One had slept in the truck, another in a tent, and a third outside.
Thefirst one up in the morning was unable to find the victim. His body was found lying on the rocks beneath a cliff, where he had fallen about 40 or 50 feet. He had a broken neck, facial lacerations and head injuries.
No foul play is suspected. • Under the supervision of Orvis Lunke a tree planting crew from Arkansas has recently completed a contract for planting 192,000 trees. Three days were spent working out of Grand Marais and seven days working near Finland and south of Isabella.
The crew, made up of 11 planters and one foreman, were professional tree planters employed by Superior Forestry Service of Tilly, Ark. In the Finland and Isabella areas, both men and trees were flown in by helicopter every morning, since the areas to be planted were extremely swampy and not accessible by any other means.
50 Years Ago • May 21, 1959 • Baccalaureate services will be held in the high school auditorium Sunday evening.
A class of 52 seniors will graduate this year — the largest in the history of the school. • An influx of campers over the past weekend besieged the Trail. Boats, trailers, launches, car tops and homemade jobs were hauled up in considerable numbers with most of the public landings parked to capacity. • Mrs. Lloyd Nelson and sons, Guy and Todd, returned from a several weeks’ stay at her uncle’s farm in Fosston, Minn. • The hospital auxiliary fund took another step forward when a group of youngsters got into the act. There had been grown-up benefit parties throughout the winter, but this time Steven Benson invited some friends to his home, and the party netted $5.50.
90 Years Ago • May 21, 1919 • TheDomestic Science kitchen will be thoroughly cleaned and the utensils put away until next year. The class had its last cooking lesson on Thursday of last week. • Thisis “clean up day” in the village and the business houses closed up at 1 o’clock so everybody could get busy. There is a large and willing crew of workers busy with hoe and rake in the downtown district, and the effect of their efforts is already noticeable.
Theschool children will lend a hand this afternoon, under the supervision of the teachers.
