An Environmental Assessment Worksheet has been filed on behalf of Lutsen North Superior Land Company proposing an 83-lot planned unit development on 240 acres adjacent to the Superior National Golf Course on the west side of the Poplar River. This new development will be in addition to the 39 lots approved by the Cook County Board in 2000 for the east side of the river.

A 16-inch gas line running parallel to Highway 61 a quarter mile southwest of the Northshore Mining Company broke close to midnight Feb. 10, stopping traffic on the highway for the better part of the day. It was re-routed around the town of Silver Bay. The cause of the break was unknown at press time.

Eric Renneberg, 13, of Grand Marais won the six-dog 90-mile race at the Mid- Minnesota Feb. 6. Competing against 18 adults, the eighth-grader defeated all of them to win the championship. It was Eric’s second race of the season; he finished 21st out of 66 mushers at Solon Spring, Wis.

The Board of Commissioners last week received copies of the proposed legislation enablingCookCountytolevya1percentsales tax to finance the expansion and improvements at North Shore Hospital. The sales tax follows guidelines of the existing 6.5 percent sales tax and is expected to generate about $400,000 per year. This would be sufficient to finance the hospital improvements, not to exceed $4 million, over a 20-year period.

The orchid that Mrs. Charles Mahlburg was wearing Friday was flown in from Hawaii for her, a birthday gift from her son who is stationed there. He is soon nearing the end of his three-year term of Army service.

Miss Denise Muehlberg had the misfortune of swallowing an open safety pin and having it lodge in her throat. It was successfully removed, but Denise spent the night in the local hospital.

Agatha Williamson enjoyed the company of 16 schoolmates on the occasion of her 13th birthday anniversary last Friday. They supped on spaghetti, and of course a delicious birthday cake. After that they attended the basketball game.

90 Years Ago · Feb. 15, 1923

The mail bus from Duluth burned out a connecting rod Monday night just after it pulled into Grand Marais.

Warren and James Huffman of Hovland were in Grand Marais Saturday and attended the mask ball Saturday night. They were both masked and Warren took the prize for being the most comical person. The ball was well attended, many different costumes being in evidence. Miss Alice Lindskog took the prize for the most beautiful costume.

Mr. and Mrs. A. Cornwell are both sick and unable to get out of bed. Dr. F.B. Hicks was out to see them yesterday, a large part of the trip being made on snow shoes. They are in need of some adult person to look after them.

The Pine Tree Girl Scout troop with their Scoutmaster, Miss Hicks, hiked out to the home of Minnie Larson in Croftville last Saturday afternoon. The afternoon was spent playing games, and Mrs. Larson served a delicious lunch.
