Judge Kenneth Sandvik ruled on Feb. 4 that a temporary injunction should be granted Cook County, barring the Township of Tofte from collecting local lodging taxes for the West End until litigation or compromise resolve the dispute. Sandvik also ruled that the townships of Lutsen and Schroeder may intervene and participate in that litigation. “Of course this is temporary – there is still litigation,” said County Attorney Bill Hennessy, who portrayed the ruling granting the injunctions as a victory.
All three school cafeteria employees handed in resignations Jan. 27. Their reasons were best left between them and other staff. Their last day will be Feb. 7. Superintendent Dale Tormondsen said he is not happy about that, but he is moving ahead so that someone will be making and serving the 300-plus meals to students on Monday morning. With luck, he said, he hopes to make hires this week.

Eighty-three citizens attended a forum at Cook County High School that focused on discipline. Among them were parents and grandparents of students, all five members of the school board, and all but three of the high school faculty members. Superintendent Don Langan called it “a highly divergent group of people.” “We introduced the topic in order to share perceptions and beliefs. No effort or opportunity or encouragement was given to advocate any one belief or perception,” he said.
The Grand Marais City Council and the Cook County Board of Commissioners agreed to join the Cook County School District in a united application for a $5,000 planning grant from Community Learning Centers of St. Paul. If the application is successful, the community will become a pilot site and receive additional funding over the next several years.

A 25-year-old man was almost instantly killed when a tree which he and his father were cutting down struck him last Friday morning in the East Colvill Road area. As the tree fell, it hung up in another tree, then suddenly let go from its stump, swung around, and hit the young man in the chest and dragged him along the ground for some distance. His father was standing nearby, and saw the accident happen.
During 1962, there were 31 applications for marriage licenses filed in the clerk of court’s office. There were 30 marriages recorded during that year. In the year 1961 there were also 31 applications and 30 marriages recorded.
Found: A plaid dress shirt on the Cramer Road between Kehoe’s Road and Highway 61. Can’t find the owner, but owner can have same if he can explain how he lost his shirt!
Mrs. Ellis Lewis is home recuperating from her operation. Her family is very glad to have her back and directing the household.

The Grand Marais Orchestra practiced Tuesday night at C.J. Johnson’s residence. They are preparing several numbers to be played in public.
A number of people in Grand Marais enjoyed their first skating of the season Sunday in the harbor.
Hjalmer Sather was awarded the contract for redecorating the lower floor of the courthouse.
The Senior Girl Scouts were out sliding Tuesday evening after supper. Afterwards they went to George Robertson’s where they had lunch. All enjoyed themselves very much.
