Seven conservationist groups have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Forest Service, challenging an August 2002 implementation of decision affecting the number of day use permits for motorized boats on the Saganaga chain of lakes. The suit, filed by Friends of the Boundary Waters and six other groups, asserts that “the Forest Service decision violates the 1978 compromise that restricted motorized use within the wilderness and that motorboat quotas were raised without justification.” The plaintiffs allege that the motorboat permits will triple from 2,376 to 6,892 on the three lake chains as a result.

The Grand Marais safe harbor/marina project is back on the table. Last week, representatives from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers met with the park board and the Harbor Committee to discuss the status of developing a safe harbor/marina in Grand Marais. The purpose of the meeting was to give a broad overview of the process required to develop the project, if the city makes the decision to go ahead with creating a safe harbor here.

Defending champion Greg Swingley of Montana defied the Beargrease jinx and Thursday became the first musher to ever win two Beargrease marathon titles. He did it by burning out his early competitors, then coasting to an easy victory over a course slowed by up to a foot of new snow.

Though a long and tedious process lies ahead, and many steps have to be taken by both the Cook County Community Clinic and the Cook County North Shore Hospital, the work on building plans and funding resources is progressing well. A model of the architect’s preliminary concept, produced at a cost of $700, is on display at the Grand Marais Public Library. The architectural firm has thus far completed about $6,000 worth of design and consulting work.

The Buick Company has loaned Lutsen Resort a Buick station wagon for use during the skiing season. This is an advertising stunt that Buick has used in other ski areas and seems to have paid off. Lutsen Resort must take care of gas and oil expenses, but all other costs are paid by the company, including insurance.

Clifford and Hilda Waters, who own and operate a trading post at the end of the Gunflint Trail, have changed the name from Way of the Wilderness Trading Post and are now doing business as North Country Trading Post.

The Bob Brazells are living in their own house again, having been in Hovland for a time. The cold weather has sort of stymied all social activities.

90 Years Ago · Jan. 18, 1923

A man was hurt at Hughes Brothers camp Friday by being kicked by a horse. His face was badly lacerated and upon an examination by Dr. F. B. Hicks it was found that the skull was fractured just above the left eye. The patient will recover.

The hike planned for Saturday by the Junior Girl Scouts was postponed on account of the snowstorm.

The first-class mail came in Tuesday night after being snowbound for two days.

The eighth grade will sell coffee and doughnuts at the Trading Post next Saturday afternoon.
