The Sawtooth race officials have decided to postpone this weekend’s Sawtooth Cross Country Ski Race due to below normal snow cover on the Pincushion race course two miles from Grand Marais. The race was originally set for Jan. 11. The race is now rescheduled for March 8. Race organizers are hoping for more normal snowfall in later January and February to provide a quality ski race on the new date.
A Grand Marais man, 34, has been charged with five criminal counts – two of them felonies – as the result of a November traffic accident that caused a widespread power outage in the city. According to the Sheriff ’s Department, the accident happened just after midnight on Nov. 21 along County Road 7. A power line was knocked down and came to rest on the roadway, causing the outage that affected about half of the city for anywhere between one and six hours. The driver fled the scene.

A chimney fire at the Village Inn and Restaurant was battled successfully by Lutsen, Tofte and Schroeder volunteers, who managed to douse the blaze after two hours. However, there was extensive smoke and water damage in the restaurant, offices and lobby of the inn. No inn units were damaged, so the inn will be open for business as usual out of temporary offices. The restaurant is closed temporarily.
Two new county commissioners, Jean Marie Modl and James Hall, joined the three holdover board members (David Bloomquist, Chester Lindskog and Wesley Hedstrom) during a special commissioners’ swearing-in and meeting Jan. 5. Meanwhile, the Cook County School Board officially welcomed Chris Conlan to its ranks. During the board’s organizational meeting, Sue Hansen was re-elected board chair, Ben Petz board clerk and Jane Mianowski treasurer.

H. Van Doren has taken over the management of the Shell station at Schroeder and will operate it under the name of H. Van Doren & Sons Shell Service. Mr. Van Doren said that, although this is primarily a gas station, they will also do various types of repair and body work. The station was formerly operated by John Nelson.
Snowmobile time is in full swing. Take a walk through the woods on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and your ears are assaulted by a racket strange to the wilderness, and a wild-eyed creature on a snowmobile goes hurtling by through the trees, headed for who knows where! Shades of the quiet snowshoe and the silent primeval!
Progress has been made on the curling club building to the point where it is expected to be completed by the end of this week. The colder weather will be favorable, if it continues, for the freezing of the ice.

Iver Anderson came in from his trap line the first of the week and reported that someone had burned his shack.
Max Becker got stuck Wednesday with the dog teams on his way to South Brule. He had to leave his load at the beaver dam and go in empty. He reported that 20 inches of snow fell at South Brule last night.
A truck from Duluth is coming up here after a load of fish burned up Tuesday night at Nigadoo Hill. The owner of the truck was Hokan Ajard.
Mrs. B.C. Sterling is now building an addition to her hotel. The work will be continued through the winter months.
