Sawtooth Mountain Elementary hosted the first annual Reader’s Digest National Word Power Challenge in grades 4 and 5. This new national vocabulary bee is for students in grades 4-8. All the Sawtooth fourth- and fifth-graders participated in the preliminary rounds as they attempted to move into the final five within each classroom. The classroom finalists then went head-tohead to determine who would represent each room in the grade level championship.
The Grand Portage Band of Chippewa announced last week the fourth running of the Grand Portage Passage Sled Dog Race, which will cross from Minnesota into Canada. “The race is on,” said Beth Gagnon, coordinator of the 2003 race. The race will start on Jan. 18 at the Grand Portage Lodge and finish at Old Fort William in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The “Dog Days of Winter Festival” will be held there at the same time.

The Schroeder Citizen Advisory Group met Nov. 2 and affirmed their continuing support for resolutions that they have previously passed, stating that their first choice for a harbor of refuge is inside Sugar Loaf Cove and their second choice is the adjacent lakeside site. The group wants to make a request to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for construction of two docks and a launching ramp, one inside the cove and a second one on the lake side.
After finishing the regular season with a respectable 8-6 record and moving into the subsection tournament as No. 2 seed from Lake Superior Conference, the Cook County Lady Vikings came to life in a hurry. Three straight wins against Fond du Lac, Wrenshall and Carlton put the volleyball squad into the subsection finals for the first time ever and brought their record to 11-6.

The Chamber of Commerce is spearheading another meeting in regard to the proposed public swimming pool project. This will be an organizational meeting to which representatives from various organizations have been invited. The public is also invited.
Moving pictures in color showing Cook County High School students during a normal school day will highlight the open house for American Education Week next Monday evening. The movie, “A Day in School,” was taken by Lamoin Knowlton, science teacher, this fall. It shows the school in actual operation, beginning with the arrival of the buses in the morning. Also covered is participation in the hot lunch program and extracurricular activities.
Chester Lindskog is in the local hospital with burns sustained on his hands while at work on Tuesday.

Big game hunters have begun to arrive in considerable numbers, and are hiking for the woods to get their camps in readiness for the opening of the season.
Hjalmar Nelson is assisting John Kihl in keeping the signal fires burning on a mountain near Greenwood Lake.
H.P. Thomas, an Alger- Smith cruiser, was in town during the past week.
Adolph S. Carlson came up from Chicago Bay last night with the election returns from that precinct.
