The Two Harbors Area Wildlife moose check stations have registered 61 moose since the season opener began Sept. 28. This compares with a final harvest figure of 75 at the end of last year’s season. It is likely that the total moose registered at the three check stations will exceed that of 2001. The present season ends Oct. 13. The registration stations are Buck’s Hardware Hank at Grand Marais, Wildhurst Lodge & Campground near Finland, and the Conoco Little Store in Two Harbors.
The driving rain, bitter wind and bone-chilling temperatures associated with Hurricane Lily didn’t dampen the hot success of three Cook County equestrians last Friday when Lilean Nicolaison, Jennifer Fenwick and Val Littfin participated in their first ever Competitive Endurance Ride at Spirit Mountain and rode off with three of the top five placements. A competitive endurance race is a cross between a road rally and a fitness run. The horse’s physical condition, including pulse and respiration, is checked by a veterinarian before the start of the race and again at the conclusion of the 26-mile event.

After hearing strenuous objections from nearby residents, the county board denied a request submitted by Verl Tilbury to spray 10,000 gallons of septage as fertilizer on his fields adjacent to County Road 7 west of Grand Marais. The board had sought input from neighbors. County sanitarian Leroy Halberg had presented to the commissioners a summary of pollution control agency guidelines and other technical information which seems to indicate that the property would be within its requirements. Residents described in detail the growing density of homes in that vicinity, characterizing it as a “prime residential area of costly homes.” One candidly described the septic contents that have been dumped, and called the dumping “disgusting and sickening.”
The North Shore Management Board, meeting in Tofte Sept. 29, approved as expected the design for construction of a harbor of refuge at Silver Bay. The design had previously been approved by the community, Silver Bay and Lake County. Thus all parties to the design have now approved, and the project is ready to go forward.

Total cost was roughly estimated at $250,000.
