The Lake Superior All- American Road Planning Council unveiled newly designed route markers for the nationally designated North Shore Scenic Drive at five presentations along the shore Aug. 29. The presentations were held at Duluth, Two Harbors, Split Rock Lighthouse, Grand Marais and Grand Portage. The route marker unveiling was also a celebration of the recent All-American Road status extension from Duluth’s Canal Park to Two Harbors. The portion of road between Two Harbors and Grand Portage achieved the designation in 2000.

Conservationists have reiterated their opposition to tripling motorboat permits in three lake chains in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The announcement came after the U.S. Forest Service denied an appeal filed by six Minnesota environmental groups to overturn the agency proposal. The groups have not decided whether to take legal action. The proposal increases motorboat permits from 2,376 to 6,892 on the Farm, Moose and Saganaga lake chains.

Sept. 14, 1992

Work is proceeding on schedule at the new Cook County Airport, and it is hoped the 4,200-foot runway will be ready to land planes by Nov. 1.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has announced that Kimball, Mink and Boys lakes, all in Cook County, will be opened to unlimited fishing from Sept. 19 through Oct. 12, 1992 and reclaimed with fish toxicants in late October 1992. Reclamation involves the poisoning of fish in a system and is necessary in this case to remove over-abundant yellow perch populations in all three lakes. According to the DNR, removal of yellow perch should result in improved growth and survival of stocked trout and improve the quality of the fisheries.

Sept. 13, 1962

A 55-year-old Silver Bay man lost his life in Caribou River Saturday afternoon while fishing there with a companion. The accident happened near Caribou Falls, which is about 300 yards inland from Highway 61. His companion ran to Manitou River to get help and was exhausted when he reached there. The body was recovered by skin divers at about 10:30 that evening. It had been in the water about five hours.

Setting an example to many a voter who stays home on election day because it’s too much trouble is Miss Margaret Oldenburg of Minneapolis, who arrived by train and bus Tuesday, same as usual to cast her vote in the primary election. She maintains her residence here staying at the East Bay Hotel, so for many years she has cast her ballot here.

Two famous Broadway actors on vacation, Lynn Fontaine and Alfred Lunt, were in Grand Marais Sunday. They were in a party of several others who were on their way to Canada for a fishing trip. The group registered at the Shoreline Motor Lodge for an overnight stay Sunday.

Sept. 14, 1922

“Make dice out of carrots,” says a cooking recipe. At last, a use for carrots.

Fred Amyotte has accepted a contract to build a couple of cottages on East Bearskin Lake.

Mr. and Mrs. Sam Zimmerman Jr. left here Sunday for Sauk Center, where they took Amelia Eide to a house of correction for incorrigible girls.

Ole Knutson of Tofte passed through town on his way to Pigeon Point Monday. He will move his fishing outfit to Tofte.
