Animal rights activists who demonstrated outside a fishing tackle shop in Grand Marais were met with a counter-protest from shop owner Tyson Cronberg during the village’s annual Fisherman’s Picnic last weekend. The demonstration outside the Beaver House may have been sparked by the presence of an independent vendor selling furs. One man showed up on Thursday and handed out anti-fur pamphlets to passersby. When the man refused to move to another corner, Cronberg decided to match his efforts by having an employee stand beside him and pass out Minnesota Small Game Hunting Regulations.

City Attorney Don Davison told council that since a problem dog ordinance has been recently put on the books, it may be time to take a look at a worsening cat problem. A couple councilors introduced the notion with remarks about abandoned and destructive felines roaming through town. The issue will be revisited at a future meeting.

A fire started at the electric light plant Sunday, caused by a spark falling down from the exhaust pipe in between the two engines, where there was a lot of grease and oil. Guy Guyman, who was working in the next room, smelled the smoke and gave the alarm. The fire bell rang and there was excitement for a few moments.
