The 62nd annual flower show of the West End Garden Club featured over 100 floral arrangements and delighted nearly 200 visitors July 27 at the Schroeder Town Hall. The theme, “Rooted in our Heritage,” produced displays that featured a wide range of flowers, both wild and cultivated, and showcased family heirlooms and stories.
Five anglers from Wisconsin have been fined $4,000 after pleading guilty to fishing violations. The men each had 10 walleye over their limit; two were also fined for obstructing a conservation officer by hiding fish and making false statements – one man told the court that he had flushed 19 walleye fillets down the toilet in an effort to cover up the over-limit.

Last Wednesday was groundbreaking at the site of the new Mountain Inn, a 30-unit lodge to be built at Lutsen Mountains by Central Group Companies of St. Cloud.
Roy Hedstrom saw a bull moose with a big rack of horns looking in his kitchen window while he was preparing breakfast one day last week. The moose ambled through the yard and across the river.
On Aug. 11 the Superior-Baikal Connect Kayaking Expedition will arrive in Grand Marais – by van! The group of 18 American, Canadian and Russian kayakers is completing the last leg of a tour around Lake Superior that began in Duluth July 5 and will culminate there Aug. 15. Although the group didn’t have enough time to kayak around the entire lake, they have kayaked stretches of the lake, stopping to make presentations in communities along the way. Grand Marais is their final stop.

David Hess fell from a pulp truck on the MacFarland Road Tuesday and had a log come down over him. He suffered a dislocated shoulder.
The blueberries are fast reaching full development. They are large and sweet and if one lands at the right place a water pail can be filled in a short time. Wild raspberries will be in full fruit in about another week.
At East Bearskin Lodge the bear have been roaming around and finally one investigated the contents of a freezer. Ed Cavanaugh rigged up an electric shock system and the next time the bear came snooping it received, instead of a feast, a severe jolt. As a result the bear “high tailed” it over the hill, probably still wondering what type of food he had encountered.

A movement has been started to have all the government corners of the county re-established. This would mean that practically a new survey of the entire county would be made. The present survey, most of it made 50 or 60 years ago, has to a great extent become obscure. In some instances the original survey was very poorly made, in others the survey has become very indefinite on account of fires and windfalls.
In response to an invitation from the Cook County Automobile Club, the Fort William City Band of 32 pieces will hold a concert in Grand Marais Sunday afternoon at the courthouse grounds. Think of music from a 32-piece band. The reputation of this musical aggregation bespeaks a high-class concert. Do not miss it. It is all free.
Last night, a Canadian car from Fort William tipped over near Mineral Center. The car was carrying two women and two men. A woman about 60 was badly cut about the head and one of the men had his knee badly cut. They stopped at Sam Linnell’s place.
