A Lake County family has claimed the two young horses found running wild in Cook County last week. Two local women corralled the horses, a 6-month-old male colt and 2-year-old filly. The two women have since been trying desperately to get close enough to the horses to care for their tick-infested coats. They were also emaciated and their hooves were so overgrown and cracked that the colt could not stand straight. Lake County authorities are looking into the care given to the horses now that they are back home. The owners have over a dozen other horses as well.

A rash of burglaries was reported last week by local residents, each of whom had valuables stolen from their unlocked vehicles. Sheriff John Lyght said 14 burglaries had been reported from last Tuesday evening until Wednesday afternoon. Valuables stolen included purses, cameras and personal items. In one case $13,000 worth of audio equipment was stolen from a van. “Local residents have got to learn to lock their valuables and place their valuables out of sight,” Lyght said.

Cook County commissioners approved a letter of support sought by Senior Center Director Sharon Bloomquist for the planned remodeling and expansion of the Grand Marais facility. Bloomquist presented information on the building project, which would include the addition of 965 square feet of space along the south side of the existing building for living room/lounge and a crafts area, plus 215 square feet of added storage space behind the present kitchen. Bloomquist said the new larger building front facing Broadway will present a fresh new appearance to the public.

The summer home people who were enjoying their colorful array of flowers were confronted with complete ruin. Leaves and pine cones were knocked off the trees and the ground remained white for several hours. The hail came down with such force that it left imprints in the ground.
