After several years of anticipation, Schroeder finally has the newly renovated post office it’s been waiting for. The ugly cement façade of the old building has yielded to a warm wood Lundiestyle exterior, its cramped dark quarters to a bright and spacious interior. There’s plenty of room now to mingle and meet, which might not be the official mission of Schroeder’s post office but which is one of its most valued services.
As the Olympic flame wound its way through America on its way to the Olympic games in Salt Lake City, only one person in the relay was selected to carry it on skis: Cook County’s own Cindy Nelson. On Friday night, Feb. 1, in front of a crowd of 7,000, Cindy gracefully skied down a run on Vail Mountain, carrying the threepound torch as she was flanked by skiers standing on the slope holding smaller torches.

The Grand Marais police department is still investigating a Jan. 19 complaint that someone spray-painted the letters “K.K.K.” on the west wall of the high school. The letters, sprayed in gray against the brown brick wall, were about two or three feet high. They were painted over the following day. Police said there is a possible suspect, a juvenile, but there is no evidence linking anyone with the defaced wall. A $300 reward has been offered for information about the vandalism.
Overnight use in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness appears to be leveling off after several years of growth. Last summer, just over 26,000 groups camped in the wilderness, which was almost identical to the summer of 1990. Use patterns changed, however, with more use shifting toward July and August and away from May, June and September. Ninety percent of the groups paddled, while nine percent used a motor. And one percent hiked.
50 Years Ago . Feb. 8, 1962
Hedstrom’s made an improvement on their sawmill last week. They installed an automatic setworks on the carriage which eliminates the need for a rider. All the setting is done by the sawyer and is accomplished by compressed air and electricity.
Chester Lindskog cut his foot when at work with the Forestry crew. The cut required several stitches.
Fire damage at the Frank Kreiner house near the freight office was not extensive. The village fire department was called late Tuesday afternoon.
Volleyball is the latest recreation to have hit couples and singles alike. Monday nights, couples meet at the Lutsen school gym and Tuesday nights the men meet for their exercise. Everyone who participates can hardly wait for the next week to come around.
90 Years Ago . Feb. 9, 1922
Many of the school pupils have had colds recently. Mrs. Spooner advised them to take a little salt when coughing. The remedy is a great success.
George Leng Tuesday was appointed to fill out the unexpired term of Thomas Carter as county auditor, tendering his resignation to the county board as clerk of court, which vacancy will be filled by appointment of a successor by the judges of the district court. Matt Johnson has been recommended by the county board.
The storm has held up the mail for a few days. It has also damaged the telephone system all around town. The telephones cannot be used at present.
Tuesday night Albert Gilbertson was backed against the garage door by the bus and had two ribs broken. He worked out the day and cranked up a couple of cars before he realized he was really hurt and did not call the doctor until the following day.
