The Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa was about to host the largest eight-dog race they have ever offered on Jan. 19, only to be challenged by the temperate weather conditions plaguing the upper Midwest. With deep regret, the race committee cancelled the race due to unseasonable weather conditions. Seventyfour dog teams had signed up for the Jan. 14 event.

County planning commissioners unanimously approved the Tait Lake Pines preliminary plat last Wednesday night. This action paves the way for the Lutsen Development Corporation’s cluster development of 31 homes on 319 acres adjacent to Tait Lake. It also disappointed and angered a large number of residents with homes on the lake.

Joyce Barrott of the Grand Marais Area Tourism Association (GMATA) reported to city council that Thunder Bay Tourism had pulled out of the Grand Marais information center — a $21,000 per year blow to the center’s budget.

Advertising for bids for four projects was approved by the park board in a meeting held to adopt the 1992 budget and capital improvements program. The go-ahead was given to two projects in the campground and two at the swimming pool. In the campground, the projects are for repair of shower stalls, tile floors and other work in the bath houses, and for an office reservation computer. At the pool, new tile will be placed in the entryway and the drainage fixed in the women’s shower room, and fuel tanks will be changed in the basement.

Preliminary plans of a schedule to replace Warren Rolek, who is leaving the Cook County School system to become superintendent of the St. Anthony-New Brighton School District in Hennepin County, were approved by the board of education. The board accepted the resignation of Rolek, who had been superintendent here more than 11 years. He is currently dividing his time between the two districts.

A “controlled area” just north of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior is being used by the U.S. Naval Air Station in Minneapolis as a training area in antisubmarine warfare. Vessel operators who must enter the practice area are requested to clear the area as expeditiously as possible. The practice will run through June 30.

Roger Tormondsen Jr. has returned to his naval base in San Diego after a three-week visit with family here.

Mrs. Daniel Kehoe was appointed a member of the Cook County Extension Committee for three years. She replaced Mrs. H.O. Pedersen, whose term had expired.

80 Years Ago · Jan. 14, 1932

The fire demon again raged in the village of Grand Marais on Monday evening when fire broke out at the office and garage used by the Gopher Truck Lines Company.

Eight reindeer arrived in town via truck, which were being taken to the stock quarter of the Dimond Reindeer Ranch at Clearwater Lake. The animals passed through town Tuesday afternoon, and are being taken to winter feeding grounds following the annual Christmas celebration tour by the Dimond Reindeer Ranch Company.

Stanley Smith sprained his ankle at basketball practice Wednesday evening. The sprain is a bad one and Smith will undoubtedly be laid up for some time.
