10 Years Ago · July 26, 1999 • A 48-year-old Remer man drowned after rescuing his daughter from the lower falls in the Temperance River last Saturday.

According to the county sheriff, a 911 call came in around 5 p.m. A young girl, wearing a life jacket, slipped in the current and went underwater at the foot of the lower falls. Minutes later, another 911 call came with the message that the girl was safe, but that a man who rescued her was in trouble. • The Cook County-Grand Marais Economic Development Authority (EDA) decided July 21 to accept a proposal by Gordon Awsumb for development of the Old Ski Hill property.

Awsumb’s proposal, which was broken into three phases over a five-year period, would eventually build 62 dwellings on oneacre plots on the lower third of the property.

Phase 1 includes 29 homes, phase 2 adds 33 more, and phase 3 will see some sort of resort or other business just east of the residential area.

20 Years Ago · July 24, 1989 • Cook County North Shore Hospital will participate in a national demonstration project designed to assist rural hospitals develop strategies to protect and strengthen local health care systems.

Grand Marais is one of four Minnesota communities participating in the demonstration project. Extensive community participation in the project has been planned, including written community surveys, key informant interviews, and community focus group discussions. • TheGrand Marais Garden Club’s annual flower show will be held from noon to 6 p.m. at First Congregational Church this Friday.

The theme of this year’s show is “Romancing Our Town with Pictures and Posies,” and the floral displays will match with an art exhibit on the grounds of the Grand Marais Art Colony.

50 Years Ago · July 23, 1959 • Officials continue their investigation of three break-ins in the west end of the county last week, according to Sheriff Emerson Morris.

Northland Hardware, Gunderson’s Store and Skou’s Garage all had small sums of money taken and at Northland six jackknives were missing.

The thieves broke windows to make entry. Fenstad’s Filling Station at Little Marais was also entered. • Doc Evans, widely known popular band leader, will give an all-request pop concert at the high school auditorium next Wednesday night. This is the second appearance on the Town Hall Music Series. • Bids will be received Aug. 11 by County Auditor Alfred H. Rindahl for a gravel base and road-mixed bituminous surfacing from Mineral Center to near Grand Portage. The road base was constructed last year.

90 Years Ago · July 23, 1919 • Mr. Munger, special writer for the Duluth Herald, is in the village this week looking over material with a view of writing up Cook County. • Thefirst carload of sheep ever shipped to Cook County arrived on the America last Wednesday in fine condition and seemed to make themselves right at home, feeding on brush and wild grass. Thesheep are high-bred Hampshire ewes, 270 in all, and none over 18 months old. Theyare being sold at actual cost to the farmers of the county at $16 apiece, and one half of them have already been sold.

This is an unusual opportunity to start a new industry in the county, which seems to promise fair returns for the future. • As we go to press we hear the firebell ring and find out that Olson’s livery has caught fire from a heap of rubbish on the outside of the barn.

Little damage was done as help was at hand to put out the fire.
