10 Years Ago · July 19, 1999 • While rumors have been circulating speaking of substantial losses at the Grand Marais Recreation Park due to the 20 percent surcharge which was placed on park and marina users earlier this season, actual occupancy and revenue totals are not quite as grim.
Speculation and guesswork have arrived at losses totaling $40,000 to $60,000 at the park, but in reality, the numbers are not nearly so low. In fact, some areas have shown improvement over the numbers of one or two years ago. • As predicted, Cook County will save about $100,000 by acting as its own contractor to close the county-owned landfill.
Tim Nelson, the county’s solid waste officer, presented the county commissioners with a list of quotes received from local contractors to do the work. The total of $242,517 is $98,618 less than the low quote received from an out-of-county contractor last month, and is a combination of portions of the job bid by three county contractors.
20 Years Ago · July 17, 1989 • Mineral exploration in Ontario north of the Cook County border is finding that there is gold in them hills.
“A few quartz veins showing trace amounts of gold have been found,” said a geologist with the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines.
Geological mapping and trenching to survey potential mineral deposits is going on in the area between Thunder Bay and Quetico Provincial Park, including the vicinity northwest of Saganaga Lake. Extensive logging operations in recent years have made it easier to gain access into the area.
Prospecting is easier in the cut areas because rock outcroppings are now exposed. • A Hovland woman died last week when her home was destroyed in a fire that was probably caused by smoking.
The home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, and it was impossible to go inside.
50 Years Ago · July 16, 1959 • Thebaby loons are half-grown and although still accompanying their parents, they dive with alacrity. • Clearwater Lodge is receiving a face lifting and is undergoing a new paint job which will restore it to a natural color.
Many trout are again being caught in Mountain Lake. • TheJuly issue of the Red Book made this mention: “Cold Lake Superior is noted for the picturesque cliffs on its North Shore Drive and rocky beaches backed by wild forest at places like Grand Marais.”
90 Years Ago · July 16, 1919 • Mr. Chas. Nylund had the misfortune to inflict a severe wound in his limb while using the ice pick this morning. • While driving to Duluth Monday afternoon, Albert Gilbertsen had a general smash-up when a heavy Cadillac from Duluth ran into him.
Mr. Gilbertsen had to leave his car and come back to the village to get another car. • All automobiles must now be registered with the register of deeds in the county in which the owner lives. The owner must call at the register’s office in person and give number and description of car as well as a description of owner.
