10 Years Ago · May 17, 1999 • About 25 people braved the wind and cold of Tuesday to meet and greet two members from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources who were in town to discuss the possibility of a large grant from the DNR to assist with the purchase of Gene’s Standard property by the city of Grand Marais.

The DNR visits each site for which an application was submitted before making its recommendation for funding to the state. The grant, called the Natural and Scenic Area Grant Program, offers up to $500,000 for the creation or preservation of green space throughout the state. Grand Marais is asking for $300,000, half of the purchase price for the property. • Cook County Middle School seventh-grader Devan Futterer has been chosen as a member of the Minnesota “Elite 8” basketball team. The team is made up of 10 of the top players in the state. It will participate in basketball tournaments this summer in Kentucky, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin.

20 Years Ago · May 15, 1989 • Construction of the Superior Hiking Trail through Cook County will grind to a halt this summer because the Minnesota Future Resources Commission recommended an allocation of $156,000 for the next biennium to be used for completion of the trail from Gooseberry Falls to Two Harbors, and for planning and administration.

50 Years Ago · May 14, 1959

Carl Hedstrom came home Saturday noon. He had been in the North Shore Hospital since Feb. 9, because of a timber unloading accident. After such a long time, Carl is glad to be at home again. • Jack Toftey has accepted a high school teaching and athletic coaching position at Adams, Minn., near the Iowa border. He will graduate in June from St. Olaf College, Northfield.

A valued player on the Viking basketball team during his high school years here, Jack continued making athletics his major interest during his college years. • The vocal and instrumental department of the high school will present their annual spring concert next Wednesday under the beautiful decorations of the Junior-Senior Prom.

This program will be presented in the entertaining and informal pop concert style. The concert will consist of numbers prepared and performed in the many contests the music department has entered this year with great success. • Grand Portage walked away with the annual grade school Field Day honors held each year on the Maple Hill grounds. They copped 150 points on a proportional basis, with Grand Marais coming in second with 100. Hovland was third with 96, and Lutsen last with 58.

90 Years Ago · May 14, 1919 • The village council has ordered that any automobile driver caught speeding on the village streets hereafter be arrested and dealt with according to law. This order will be strictly enforced. • Theannual meeting of the library board was held Tuesday evening. • Please take notice, that all residents and property owners of the Village of Grand Marais, are hereby requested to clean up and remove all ashes, garbage, filth and refuse of every kind deposited or placed by such residents on their own property or in streets or alleys abutting upon their respective premises.

The State Board of Health as well as the local Board of Health require that this notice should be strictly adhered to.
