Douglas Chase Anderson (Doug)

Douglas Chase Anderson (Doug), age 75, and his loving wife, Katie, had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with many family and friends on July 25, 2017. Having attained his longtime goal of a 50-year marriage, he died peacefully at home on July 27, 2017.

Doug is survived by his wife, Katherine; son Hans and daughter Erica; brother Steven (Ann); two granddaughters and many relatives and friends.

Doug found his niche when in 1995 he moved to Grand Marais because he had purchased the Grand Marais Dairy Queen. He loved ‘schmoozing’ with the customers and was told by one of the local ministers that he had his own ministry by being a role model to his teenaged employees. In 1996, his wife Katie joined him in Grand Marais, along with his parents, Edith and Goodwin. Edith got wonderful care at the Cook County Care Center and Goodwin lived with Doug and Katie until his death in October of 1997.

Doug was an active participant in community affairs. He was on the board of the Cook County Historical Society. As such, he became the director of the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery for three years after he sold the Dairy Queen in 1998. His longest last post-DQ job was as a Realtor. He worked nine years for Red Pine Realty. Many of those years, he was “the only blind Realtor in Cook County.”

Always with a ready smile, in spite of adversity, he was a gentleman, ethical and honest.

Memorial service was held Aug. 9 at the House of Hope Church, St. Paul. Memorials to Leader Dogs, an organization supported by the Grand Marais Lions Club.
