Following up on stellar results on a written exam and a top five finish at competition in St. Paul in March, Cook County Middle Schooler Adam Dorr and his family traveled to Louisville, Kentucky in May so Adam could compete in the National History Bee. Adam represented Cook County very well at the event.

Adam, who will be going into 8th grade next year, faced middle school students from around the United States. After 10 rounds of competition, he placed 230 out 540 students in the middle school division.

Adam also took an exam on military history, which is a topic he enjoys studying. After he won the regional competition in St. Paul in March, Adam told the Cook County News-Herald he preferred U.S. history. Last year Adam also participated in the Minnesota History Day competition creating a website entitled George Patton: Leadership and Legacy.

In the History Bee exam, Adam scored 96 out of 100, which put him in an impressive third place in a field of 45 students in that exam category. The winner and runner up in that division both scored 98 out of 100.

Social Studies Teacher Dorie Carlson, who started his adventure by suggesting he take the History Bee test, said she is very proud of her young student.

Carlson is retiring this year and her colleague—and Adam’s dad—Mitch Dorr said he and his wife Sharon wanted to give extra thanks to Carlson. He said, “She saw this opportunity earlier in the year, had Adam take a test, and the rest just kind of happened. Dorie has been a blessing to this school and as parents, and as a colleague, we value everything she does here at Cook County Schools.”

Dorr added thanks to everyone who helped Adam make the trip to St. Louis, such as the Cook County Education Foundation, the Grand Marais Lions Club, the Grand Marais Lioness Club and the school. “We are proud parents of kids in the Cook County School District and the great Cook County community,” said Mitch Dorr.
