Dorothy Mae Nicolaison Whipkey, age 90, passed away on November 6, 2018 at the North Shore Health Care Center.
Dorothy was born in Grand Marais, Minnesota on December 13, 1927. Her parents were Chris and Ella Nicolaison. There were nine children in the family.
After graduating from what was then called Grand Marais High School, Dorothy attended St. Luke’s Nursing School and upon completing her degree, she would later become a registered nurse in Dover, Ohio. She moved back to Grand Marais and worked as a registered nurse and later became director of nurses for both the North Shore Hospital and Care Center.
After leaving the director of nurses position Dorothy continued to work as a registered nurse for years.
Dorothy was always there to help and care for people. She loved people and they loved her for caring. She really enjoyed gardening and she had beautiful gardens. She loved playing cards with her family and friends.
Three children survive Dorothy: Ellie Christiansen, and Craig and Bill Whipkey. Craig and Bill live in Washington State, and Ellie lives in Grand Marais.
Grandchildren Jessie, James, Ali and Heather and great-grandchildren Mia, Luella, Logan, and Hunter plus many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends also survive her.
Preceding her in death were her parents and eight siblings.
There will be a celebration of life next spring. The day and time will be announced at a later date.
Dorothy always loved springtime, looking forward to the flowers blooming. She liked all of the seasons but spring was her favorite.
