Dorothy Jane Mottl,

86, Grand Marais, died on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012 at the North Shore Care Center.

She was born March 11, 1926 to Frank and Emily Mottl in Chicago, Illinois.

Following high school graduation, she attended Chicago Teachers College and graduated with an Associate Arts degree in physical education. She went on to teach at Edison Elementary School on Chicago’s south side for 29 years.

She traveled extensively every summer throughout Europe and also in Alaska with her teaching friends.

Following retirement, she moved to Grand Marais in 1978.

She loved children and continued substitute teaching for a number of years in both Grand Marais and Grand Portage schools.

She delivered flowers for Lady Slipper Floral for 20 years throughout the entire county and scores of people were familiar with her friendly, congenial personality as well as her love of the north woods. Through the years, she also worked at White Pine North, Clothier Funeral Home and Sawtooth Mountain Clinic.

Dorothy had a lifelong serious interest in Civil War history and had extensive knowledge of the military battles and the general officers involved in the major battlegrounds.

She was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan and rarely missed a televised game. She loved animals and her dogs were her constant companions. She also loved to photograph moose. She spent countless enjoyable hours and days driving around Cook County in search of moose.

Her friendly winsomeness will be missed by all who knew her.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Emily Mottl.

A memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 11 at the Cornerstone Community Church in Grand Marais.
