The Electoral College is stealing your right to be heard. A democracy by definition is a government by the people. That’s us. A true democracy gives each person a vote, yet if the majority of my state votes contrary to my vote, the Electoral College erases my voice from the election.
What?
With our current system, swing states determine the outcome of presidential elections, and that makes me furious. I want my vote to count, and I’m sure you do, too. There is hope, however: a movement to make each vote count. It’s called the National Popular Vote.
The National Popular Vote bill would guarantee the presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In order for the National Popular Vote to be effective, it needs passage by enough states to reach a total of 270 electoral votes, a majority of the nation’s 538 electors. Instead of abolishing the Electoral College system, this bill circumvents it.
The bill has been passed by 15 states and the District of Columbia (196 electoral votes). It has also passed one legislative branch of eight additional states, including Minnesota (75 electoral votes). If all eight of these states pass the bill, the presidency will go to the candidate who wins the popular vote.
Every person’s vote should count, especially in a presidential election. Please contact your local legislators and encourage them to support the National Popular Vote Bill. It’s easy— go to this website: nationalpopularvote.com
Make your vote count in the next presidential election.
