I can easily imagine a flagpole placed in the Harbor Park so that it doesn’t ruin the ambience of the harbor. For crying out loud, it’s a flagpole, not a Wal-Mart! Apparently, a lot of people have forgotten what kind of stuff used to be on that site (or elsewhere around the harbor, for that matter).
The reasons for opposition that I’ve heard are ridiculous. We’re supposed to believe that the current Harbor Park is the result of perfection in design and planning? If that were somebody’s second-year college landscape architecture project, it might be worth a C- at best.
I hope the flagpole proponents haven’t given up. I hope they’re going to the drawing board, now that they’ve found out what the DNR wants to see.
