I read with interest the details of the recent Grand Marais Park Board meeting and review of the options for the park. Although my family and I are not residents of Grand Marais, it is where I grew up.
I realize that “times are a changin” and economics and the reality of just making things work often dictate a course of action. I also realize that “visions” and personal agendas get involved also.
I ask that those in involved in the ongoing development of plans for the recreational park would take into consideration some thoughts on the matter.
1.The park’s attraction is its setting, providing the simple beauty of a natural shoreline that has not seen much change in a 100 years.
2. Access to this uncluttered, natural shoreline is easy and enjoyed by all who visit. It is already very “green” and most everyone appreciates and honors that fact by their care of, and for, it.
3. The park as it is now and even if expanded, for more RVs, would only enhance its effectiveness as a unique attraction for visitors.
4.Yes, those “Campers on Steroids”, big RVs with the $20,000 SUV being towed behind are not for all of us. Expensive camping units are nonetheless, the camping style of choice for many. There is no way to prove it, but I suspect those folks spend a bit more money than the Moen family does when they come to town!
5. Cook County is a “green” area! Take a hike up to Pincushion Mountain or some other trail. Do we need more space set aside that can’t be accessed down along the shore?
6.The removal of the old power plant is a real plus Although when I was a boy playing around there, I was never hindered in my activity of jumping rocks and hiding out from my playmates.
7. Walking through the park and along the road leading to the marina is always a pleasant experience. Campers along the way are always friendly and seem glad to say “hello.” Anyone who is intimidated by walking there has other “issues.”
I appeal to all, don’t mess up a “good thing.” Please don’t try to make Grand Marais into Duluth or some other place it isn’t. Grand Marais is unique and very precious!
