Donald O. Ingram passed away Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the North Shore Care Center in Grand Marais at the age of 86.
He was born May 22, 1927 to Claude and Ada (Norris) Ingram at Big Lake, Minn. Don’s family moved to Grand Marais when he was a young child at age 4, and he was a graduate of Cook County High School.
After graduation he enlisted in the Navy and when he returned attended the University of Minnesota where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in forestry. He married Lutsen native Christine “Tina” Nelson who preceded him in death in April 2010. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage and from that union raised three children.
Don worked 39 years at Consolidated Papers, Inc., now New Page, in a variety of roles. He managed the pulpwood rafting operations at Grand Marais, Sugar Loaf at the West End of Cook County, and at Ashland, Wis. He finished his career as the manager of the Timberlands Division in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.
Don and Tina moved back to Grand Marais for their retirement, spending many winters in Gold Canyon, Ariz. Don enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, and his cabin retreat at Two Island Lake. He was an active member of numerous professional and community organizations throughout his life.
Don was preceded in death by his wife and parents; sister, Joanne (Dwain) Staples; and great-grandson Cashton.
He is survived by his sister Phyllis (Arthur) Larish of Waunakee, Wis.; children, Alan (Christie) Ingram of Apple Valley, Minn; Marty (Laurie) Ingram of Loretto, Minn; Nancy (John) Gerbozy of Whitefish, Mont; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial gathering to celebrate Don’s life will be held in April 2014 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Grand Marais. Details for this will be announced in the spring.
