Donald Emil Schulte, 79, passed away at the Cook County Care Center on May 4, 2016 after an ongoing battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Don was born to Walter and Alta Schulte on June 6, 1936 and lived his entire life in Grand Marais.
Don loved hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, trapping, swimming, hiking and taking care of his pets. He also enjoyed spending time in the West End with the Jimmy Hall family.
His work career included school bus driver, logger, Taystee Bread truck driver, and an ironworker. He operated his father’s Pure Oil gas station for many years. He also co-owned three local businesses including Best Western Superior Inn, Schulte Sanitary Service, and Grand Marais Super America.
Don was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He also enjoyed attending Bible Study at the Care Center. He participated on the Grand Marais Public Utilities Commission, the Historical Society, the Grand Marais Recreation Park Board, and retired from the volunteer Grand Marais Fire Department.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Alta Schulte and his first wife Melva, Uncle Neil and Doreen Hall, and brother-in-law Dick Kainz.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis Schulte; children Dena (Peter) Schliep, Craig (Lynn) Schulte and Diana (Aaron) Young; stepchildren Rob and Ronnie Stone and Sharlyne (John) Brayden; six grandchildren and four step-grandchildren; brother Walter “Butch” (Rhonda) Schulte; sister Darlene Kainz; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice in remembrance of Don.
