Dog antics

After watching a Chinese Crested dog dance on its hind legs and an adorable Dachshund open kitchen cabinet drawers in “Funny Dog Videos,” I figured I could put together a pretty good show using my dogs, past and present.

I’d begin with Bing, the 96 lb. chocolate lab who grew up with my children.

Bing’s most infamous antic involved an antique Persian wool stuffed animal lamb that had been given to my daughter by a Grandma. Bing was not allowed to wrap his jaws around anything other than his own squeaky toy.

However, one morning the family awoke to bits of black Persian wool scattered on the dining room floor. In the dark of the night, Bing had crept into the upstairs bedroom, brought the lamb downstairs, chewed it beyond repair, and then returned to his bed as if nothing happened.

My next antic-maker would be Molly, a cute, small chocolate lab who didn’t like being left alone. She somehow managed to open cabinet doors or scavenge through waste paper baskets until she found the most disgusting item possible. She would then place this item in the center of the living room rug to greet us when we returned.

She was the most human-like of all my dogs. When a group of high school girls dressed for prom at my house, Molly kept pestering them until someone slipped a gaudy necklace over her head.

She must have figured she was now “one of the girls” and sat, in the middle of the “getting dressed” chaos proudly wearing her necklace.

My next dog was a beautiful yellow lab named Goldie. She looked every inch a purebred Labrador retriever. However, the poor thing had none of the characteristics. She was a terrible swimmer but usually managed to retrieve the dummy. However, she always ran into the woods and dropped it, apparently not wanting to share. So much for duck hunting.

Abby, a setter/ lab mix would be my next performer. When she came to live with me and wanted to be certain that I liked her, she approached me, and then lifted her lips in the funniest smile you’ve ever seen. Of course, she melted my heart.

And last, but not least, is Mr. Magoo, the pug. He has performed a lifetime of antics, all involving food, but that’s another story.

When it comes right down to it, all dog owners believe their dogs have the funniest traits.
