Gary Dockan, a 1973 graduate of Cook County High School, now living in Pittsburgh, PA, was recently recognized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the airline industry for his contributions to CDM (collaborative decision making).

CDM is comprised of representatives from government, general aviation, airlines, private industry and academia who work together to create technological and procedural solutions to air traffic flow management.

Dockan is an Air Traffic Control (ATC) Coordinator and Advanced Qualifications Program (AQP) certified instructor, evaluator and CDM training leader for American Airlines. AQP is an enhanced training program certified by the FAA that is normally used for pilot training. “The profession I teach is called Flight Dispatch. A Flight Dispatcher is the pilot on the ground. The Flight Dispatcher has the same Airline Transport Pilot certificate that the pilots possess. US Airways has incorporated the strict adherence to safety, that pilot training has in their training into Flight Dispatch,” said Dockan.

He has been developing training for the industry side of aviation for the last 10 years.

Of the award, Dockan said, “It was very rewarding to be acknowledged by these captains of the aviation Industry.”
