The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently hosted a dinner at the American Legion in Grand Marais to update volunteer safety instructors and to thank them for taking the time to teach safety and ethics in the DNR safety programs.
Northeast Regional Training Officer Shelly Patten gave a report on the volunteer instructor forums that were held throughout the state in the spring. Patten said they were enjoyed by all who attended. Hundreds of ATV, firearm and snowmobile safety instructors stopped in at one of the 19 forums for snacks and updates on a variety of DNR youth safety program items.
Patten also said that the DNR had surveyed students who had participated in training programs in 2013. She said youths were asked to rate the volunteer instructors on a scale of 1 – 5, with 5 being the best, on various aspects of the training. “The overall score was 4.8,” said Patten. “So you guys are doing a great job! We couldn’t offer these programs without you guys.”
