The Fourth of July parade in Tofte is a very gala event. Post 413 American Legion has led the parade for many years. A fun time for all. This year I was appalled at the sight I witnessed.
As I approached the beginning of the parade set up, laid on the ground across the parade route was an American flag from one shoulder of the road to the other. The flag was about 20-by-30 feet. I approached the group of teenagers and asked who was in charge. An “adult” said, “I am.” I tried to explain to him that the flag never touches the ground. He wasn’t too concerned. I again approached him and they finally picked it up. As you can see in the photo in the paper, it is being carried kinda bundled up. This is improper.
I will admit to not always using proper etiquette in displaying the flag. But this was inexcusable! The teenager and the “adult” had no idea what they were doing. If you have any questions as to proper etiquette, I have brochures at the Post lounge and they are free, or call me. Don’t let this happen again.
It’s disgusting to see so many adults around there and no one taking action. I could not believe it and am disgusted. Someone has to tell the younger generation what it’s all about.
Also we need to have a deputy lead the parade in Tofte and town. We asked him to ask people through his PA system to show proper respect: remove hat, stand up, etc. Well apparently some upstanding citizen thought this was wrong. No more deputy. Give me a break people.
