Not even ground fog and a light rain could dampen the 40 golfers’ enthusiasm who participated in the first annual Disabled American Veterans golf outing held on Saturday, September 12, at Gunflint Hills golf course.

The 18-hole four-person scramble saw some fine play and even a hole in one!

Local UPS driver Raffy Johnson coordinated the event.

The two winning teams tied with eight under.

Following the golf, the players headed downtown to eat dinner at the Birch Terrace and to see if their raffle tickets were pulled for the many prizes donated by area businesses. Scott Bystrom won the big prize: a Remington shotgun donated by the restaurant.

Following the fundraiser, event organizer Raffy Johnson exclaimed, “In the military, the saying is, “If it ain’t raining, you ain’t training” that was the situation when we began our golfing adventure! I would like to thank all the golfers who participated in less than ideal conditions.

“The fundraising event netted $1380.00 in profits to support Cook County Veterans, a very good effort for the first time event. I would like to quickly thank a few parties: Barry Pederson, owner of North Shore Waste (quite frankly, this event would not have happened without his support), Dave Larsen, one of the owners of Birch Terrace, who not only provided his dining room but served the best meal I will ever eat at a golf event, Paul and Lisa at the Gunflint Hills, thank you for all your efforts, and Napa and Hungry Hippie Hostel and Tacos, for their generous door prizes.

“I look forward to thanking all parties in the near future, and I hope everyone had a great time. I know I did!”

“I look forward to next year’s event.”

All of the tournament profits will be dispersed to Cook County veterans with the support of the Cook County Veterans Affairs and other local veteran organizations.
