Once again a group of local snowmobilers is going to “ride for those who can’t” in the Blackwoods Blizzard Tour. The Blizzard Tour supports the victims of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and their families. The three-day, 370-mile snowmobile ride takes place in February 2012, but riders are preparing now.
The third annual “Dinner with a Purpose” will be held at My Sister’s Place restaurant in Grand Marais on Saturday, December 10 from 3 – 5 p.m. The regular dinner menu will be available and 50% of the bill will be donated to the ALS Association.
Restaurant owners Paul and Cara Sporn are making this offer on behalf of Tom and Kathy Bernier, Paul Bernier, and Scott “Emit” Backstrom of Grand Marais, who are riding in the 2012 Blackwoods Blizzard Tour.
In addition to dinner, there will be pictures with Santa, hot cocoa and cider from 5 – 9 p.m. and music with Rod Dockan and Carah Thomas from 7 – 9 p.m. Homemade caramels will also be for sale.
The 181 riders in the 2011 Blizzard Tour raised $650,000. Local snowmobilers collected over $8,000 last year. Riders hope to exceed that amount for the ALS Association this year.
ALS is better known as Lou Gerhig’s disease. It is a fatal degenerative disease that affects the central nervous system. There is no known cause and no known cure, which is why the Berniers and Bystrom are participating in the Blizzard Tour—riding for those who can’t.
